Is private equity harder than investment banking?
Both careers demand exceptionally long hours, with investment banking often requiring analysts and associates to work 80 hours a week or more. Private equity generally offers a better work/life balance, but long hours may be required, particularly during the execution phase of a deal.
In fact, PE Analysts often earn less than IB Analysts! So, you might initially make less money if you start in private equity.
Private equity professionals work long hours and are highly competitive and must think critically, and have a passion for financial investing deals, not just following the markets. Other requirements to start a career in private equity are: Excellent grades and a notable transcript in school.
On the whole, investment bankers are drawn to private equity for its long-term focus, greater control over investment decisions, higher compensation, entrepreneurial opportunities, and the opportunity to develop a more diverse skill set.
Working at a Private Equity Firm
The private equity business attracts some of the best in corporate America, including top performers from Fortune 500 companies and elite management consulting firms.
Private equity firms typically don't hire straight out of college or business school. Firms often prefer candidates with a strong professional background in investment banking, expecting at least two years of experience as an investment banking analyst.
Work/life balance.
In private equity, you can have very quiet periods followed by very intense weeks when your team is working on a deal. The 'peaky' nature of workload is similar to the one investment bankers face.
For a student looking to break into one of the top 10 PE firms, your chance is 1 in 300 or 0.33%. To break into one of the top 10 hedge fund firms, your chance is 1 in 147 or 0.68%.
The short answer: For M&A Investment Banking and Private Equity, you don't need anything beyond basic arithmetic. We are talking about addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Throw in some percentages and growth rates and some means and medians. That's the math needed for Investment Banking.
Private Equity Salary Data | ||
---|---|---|
2nd Year Associate | $160k – $180k | $170k – $270k |
3rd Year Associate | $180k – $200k | $180k – $300k |

How many hours a week is private equity?
The average during a busy time for associates and analysts is usually around ~60-70 hours per week. But it's all dependent on how many deals and investments are on the go. The above hours will vary based on if there's a live deal. Basically, everything goes on hold, and you need to be available 24/7.
Position Title | Typical Age Range | Base Salary + Bonus (USD) |
---|---|---|
Senior Associate | 26-32 | $250-$400K |
Vice President (VP) | 30-35 | $350-$500K |
Director or Principal | 33-39 | $500-$800K |
Managing Director (MD) or Partner | 36+ | $700-$2M |
But the fundamental reason behind private equity's growth and high rates of return is something that has received little attention, perhaps because it's so obvious: the firms' standard practice of buying businesses and then, after steering them through a transition of rapid performance improvement, selling them.
Private Equity Associate salary in India ranges between ₹ 2.5 Lakhs to ₹ 44.0 Lakhs with an average annual salary of ₹ 11.8 Lakhs. Salary estimates are based on 125 latest salaries received from Private Equity Associates. 0 - 5 years exp. 0 - 5 years exp.
Private Equity Skills and Job Requirements
Competitive, high achievers who are willing to work long, grinding hours. Extremely attentive to detail. Interested in deals rather than simply following the markets or investing in public companies or other assets.
Private Equity Associate Lifestyle and Hours
At many smaller funds and middle-market funds, you can expect to work 60-70 hours per week, mostly on weekdays, with occasional weekend work when deals heat up.
After two years of working for the investment bank, top performing analysts are often offered the chance to stay for a third year, and the most successful analysts can be promoted after three years to investment banking associate. Analysts are the lowest in the hierarchy chain and therefore do the majority of the work.
As for hours, both private equity and investment banking can be demanding careers. However, investment bankers tend to work longer hours, often working late into the night and on weekends. Private equity firms also tend to have a more relaxed work environment and offer more flexible hours.
The typical split in profits between LPs and GP is 80 / 20. That means, the LP gets distributed 80% of the profits on an exit (after returning their initial capital) and the GP keeps 20% of the profits.
The 2 and 20 is a hedge fund compensation structure consisting of a management fee and a performance fee. 2% represents a management fee which is applied to the total assets under management. A 20% performance fee is charged on the profits that the hedge fund generates, beyond a specified minimum threshold.
What is the rule of 72 in private equity?
The Rule of 72 is a simple way to determine how long an investment will take to double given a fixed annual rate of interest. Dividing 72 by the annual rate of return gives investors a rough estimate of how many years it will take for the initial investment to duplicate itself.
State | Annual Salary | Monthly Pay |
---|---|---|
California | $89,038 | $7,419 |
Maryland | $88,832 | $7,402 |
Tennessee | $88,240 | $7,353 |
Utah | $87,969 | $7,330 |
How much does a Private Equity make in California? As of Feb 23, 2024, the average annual pay for the Private Equity jobs category in California is $107,284 a year. Just in case you need a simple salary calculator, that works out to be approximately $51.58 an hour. This is the equivalent of $2,063/week or $8,940/month.
Also, low grades are more of a problem for the most “prestigious” front-office roles: Investment banking, private equity, etc. You could still win middle or back-office roles with a lower GPA, and you could also win non-IB-but-still-revenue-generating roles such as ones in commercial real estate or real estate lending.
Overview. Private equity is a very lucrative career. As an asset class, private equity has enjoyed tremendous success over the past decade. Investors around the globe continue to pile their money into private equity firms.
