How much money should I have at 19?
There is no particular amount of money a 19 year old should have in their savings. Lots of different reasons for having and not having money saved. If, you are working full time, you should work to save enough money for 3–6 months expenses.
If you are between the ages of 18-24, the average net worth is approximately $28,707 and the median net worth is approximately $8,216. Even in this age group, the average net worth by age is skewed toward the high end.
Rule of thumb? Aim to have three to six months' worth of expenses set aside. To figure out how much you should have saved for emergencies, simply multiply the amount of money you spend each month on expenses by either three or six months to get your target goal amount.
According to the aforementioned recommendations, they should save $116–$232 per month, which amounts to $1,392–$2,784 per year. You can use this to calculate the savings target your child should reach by the age of 18. For instance, if they started working at 16, they should save up to around $5,500.
- Track your spending.
- Prioritize paying off debt.
- Set short and long-term goals.
- Create a detailed plan.
- Try a zero-sum budget.
- Start an emergency fund.
- Take advantage of employer matching.
- Practice frugal habits.
From age 18-24, only 1% of earners (7% altogether) earn $100k per year or more. This makes these age groups by far the lowest earners in the US. Americans make the most income gains between 25 and 35. Only 2% of 25-year-olds make over $100k per year, but this jumps to a considerable 12% by 35.
When your savings reaches $100,000, that's a milestone worth marking. In a world where 57% of Americans can't cover an unexpected $1,000 expense, having a six-figure savings account is commendable.
According to BLS data, the median salary of 16- to 19-year-olds is $620 per week, which comes out to $32,240 per year. That's the median across all races, genders and education levels.
Generally, having at least three to six months of living expenses can offer a safety net if you experience job loss or a medical emergency. For example, if you have monthly expenses of $5,000, aim to save $15,000 to $30,000 in your emergency fund.
While $40,000 is a good start on the road to building a nest egg, you probably want to retire with a lot more money than that. But it may be more than possible if you commit to saving and investing in a brokerage account consistently for the remainder of your career.
How much do 19 year olds have in their bank account?
No matter your income, a few hundred dollars won't last long if you lose your job — but a sizable portion of the youngest Gen Zers is in much better shape than that. About 11% of 18- to 24-year-olds have $1,000-$2,000 in savings while even more — nearly 13% — have $2,000-$5,000.
There is no particular amount of money a 19 year old should have in their savings. Lots of different reasons for having and not having money saved. If, you are working full time, you should work to save enough money for 3–6 months expenses.
However, a good rule of thumb for a 21-year-old is to have $6,000 in a savings account for emergencies and long-term financial goals. And that requires you to learn how to start budgeting and saving money. If you're nowhere near that amount, don't panic.
It is never too late to start saving money you will use in retirement. However, the older you get, the more constraints, like wanting to retire, or required minimum distributions (RMDs), will limit your options.
One key short-term goal to plan for is the need for an emergency fund. According to Bankrate, your emergency fund should equal three to six months of bills. CNN Money suggests that you start saving for long-term retirement goals in your 20s, as soon as you leave school.

In 2022, over 34% of American households made over $100,000. This puts you in the top 24% of the US population.
According to the U.S. Census, only 15.3% of American households make more than $100,000 annually. A $100,000 salary can yield a monthly income of $8,333.33, a biweekly paycheck of $3,846.15, a weekly income of $1,923.08, and a daily income of $384.62 based on 260 working days per year.
While people have different qualifications and different ideas of what constitutes a good salary, most would consider $75,000 per year to be good pay.
“By the time you're 40, you should have three times your annual salary saved. Based on the median income for Americans in this age bracket, $100K between 25-30 years old is pretty good; but you would need to increase your savings to reach your age 40 benchmark.”
Do 1 in 6 millennials have 100K?
According to a new Bank of America survey, 16 percent of millennials — which BoA defined as those between age 23 and 37 — now have $100,000 or more in savings. That's pretty good, considering that by age 30, you should aim to have the equivalent of your annual salary saved.
If you're looking for a ballpark figure, Taylor Kovar, certified financial planner and CEO of Kovar Wealth Management says, “By age 30, a good rule of thumb is to aim to have saved the equivalent of your annual salary. Let's say you're earning $50,000 a year. By 30, it would be beneficial to have $50,000 saved.
By age 25, you should have saved about $20,000. Looking at data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for the fourth quarter of 2023, the median salaries for full-time workers were as follows: $712 per week, or $37,024 each year for workers ages 20 to 24.
I would say as much as you can afford to save. However, I would recommend that everyone in their 20s should at least be saving enough money (on their own, without the help of anyone else preferably) for an emergency fund that can cover 3–6 months worth of expenses.
Annual Salary | Hourly Wage | |

Top Earners | $86,000 | $41 |
75th Percentile | $68,500 | $33 |
Average | $44,910 | $22 |
