How many hours do private equity work?
Private Equity Analyst Hours
Investors need to know they can rely on what you say and the analysis you're producing. The average during a busy time for associates and analysts is usually around ~60-70 hours per week. But it's all dependent on how many deals and investments are on the go. The above hours will vary based on if there's a live deal.
At middle-market, upper-middle-market, and boutique firms, Principals might work an average of 50-60 hours per week (again, with longer hours when deals heat up). That said, work/life balance varies significantly at firms in this size range.
We are not going to address the exit opportunities and hours/lifestyle for each level because PE is usually the end goal, and the hours don't necessarily change much as you move up – expect 60-70 per week at smaller firms and 80+ at mega-funds.
As for hours, both private equity and investment banking can be demanding careers. However, investment bankers tend to work longer hours, often working late into the night and on weekends. Private equity firms also tend to have a more relaxed work environment and offer more flexible hours.
Work/life balance.
In private equity, you can have very quiet periods followed by very intense weeks when your team is working on a deal. The 'peaky' nature of workload is similar to the one investment bankers face.
Private equity professionals work long hours and are highly competitive and must think critically, and have a passion for financial investing deals, not just following the markets.
Private equity work is demanding at every level, but especially in junior roles (analyst and associate). On average, most private equity associates work 60-70 hours per week, though this can very significantly based on whether or not you have a live deal in the works.
Why Leave Private Equity? The short, simple answer is that you might work in the field for a few years and find out it's not for you. For example, maybe you have to do a lot of “sourcing” (cold calling), which you dislike. Or you find it boring to look at deals constantly but reject 99% of them.
The average workweek might be 50-55 hours, but your bonus will also be 15-30% of your base salary rather than 50-100%. At the top levels, private banking can be quite lucrative with a good lifestyle, but it is not easy to get there, and ~95%+ will burn out or quit along the way.
Is private equity a risky job?
Private equity funds are illiquid and are risky because of their high use of debt; furthermore, once investors have turned their money over to the fund, they have no say in how it's managed. In compensation for these terms, investors should expect a high rate of return.

Venture Capital Associate Lifestyle and Hours
The hours worked vary by firm type and size, but the average is around 50-60 hours per week. That means that you'll be in the office or meetings most of the day on weekdays, with relatively free weekends.
While both careers are highly regarded and financially lucrative, the choice is personal. Investment banking is typically viewed as glamorous but also requires longer hours and the sacrifice of a personal life. Private equity is extremely prestigious.
Working at a Private Equity Firm
The private equity business attracts some of the best in corporate America, including top performers from Fortune 500 companies and elite management consulting firms.
Both investment banking and private equity are demanding careers that require long working hours, although private equity firms tend to have a more relaxed work environment and offer a more flexible schedule.
On the bright side, after a couple of years at a top consulting firm, you won't have any issues translating your presentation skills to PE. In addition, at larger funds, you'll be interacting with Finance Directors and CEOs even at a junior level.
There are significant differences between serving clients as a management consultant and serving businesses in a PE firm. Compared to consultants, private equity professionals often have more influence and a more direct impact on the companies with which they work.
But in real life, most people are drawn to private equity because it offers high compensation, somewhat better hours than investment banking, and more interesting work.
Private Equity Associate Lifestyle and Hours
At many smaller funds and middle-market funds, you can expect to work 60-70 hours per week, mostly on weekdays, with occasional weekend work when deals heat up.
Is private equity a lot of hours?
People in private equity are older, more professional and tend to have young families, so most people care about having good weekends. When you're in the heat of a live deal, you'll most likely be working 80+ hours per week.
As of October 2019, the US college population size of students pursing business degrees is 3.9 million,3 according to the National Center for Education Statistics. For a student looking to break into one of the top 10 PE firms, your chance is 1 in 300 or 0.33%.
Private-equity firms typically run leaner operations than banks and so have less need to cut jobs during slowdowns. But some have laid off about 5% to 15% of their staff, said Sasha Jensen, founder and chief executive of Jensen Partners, an executive-search firm for alternative-asset managers.
As soon as the fund documents are signed, investors become Limited Partners and the General Partnership is born. An investment period usually lasts from three to five years, as would be projected in the offering materials.
Private equity firms are usually smaller and more selective about their employees. But once a hire is made, they care less about how performance is maintained. There are exceptions and overlaps in every industry but, in general, the average day is a bit less stressful for private equity associates.
