Are Fidelity ETFs worth it?
ETFs have several advantages for investors considering this vehicle. The 4 most prominent advantages are trading flexibility, portfolio diversification and risk management, lower costs versus like mutual funds, and potential tax benefits.
Fidelity's actively managed ETFs seek better investing outcomes* and offer trading flexibility along with potential tax efficiency. *While active ETFs offer the potential to outperform an index, these products may more significantly trail an index as compared with passive ETFs.
If you want to actively trade within your accounts, Fidelity might be the better option. However, if you want to focus more on index investing, or you want to use a robo-advisor, Vanguard has a slight edge.
ETFs are subject to market fluctuation and the risks of their underlying investments. ETFs are subject to management fees and other expenses. Unlike mutual funds, ETF shares are bought and sold at market price, which may be higher or lower than their NAV, and are not individually redeemed from the fund.
For most individual investors, ETFs represent an ideal type of asset with which to build a diversified portfolio. In addition, ETFs tend to have much lower expense ratios compared to actively managed funds, can be more tax-efficient, and offer the option to immediately reinvest dividends.
Fidelity Blue Chip Growth Fund (FBGRX)
One of Fidelity's top-performing funds, FBGRX is also one of its oldest. Dating back to 1987, FBGRX has managed to outperform the Russell 1000 Growth Index since inception, returning an annualized 12.9% versus 11.5%.
The largest Fidelity ETF is the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund FBTC with $10.21B in assets. In the last trailing year, the best-performing Fidelity ETF was FDIG at 82.04%. The most recent ETF launched in the Fidelity space was the Fidelity Low Duration Bond ETF FLDB on 02/26/24.
Fees. Fidelity has average trading and low non-trading fees, including commission-free US stock trading. On the negative side, margin rates and fees for some mutual funds can be high. We compared Fidelity's fees with two similar brokers we selected, E*TRADE and TD Ameritrade.
(Although Vanguard offers some actively managed funds, too.) Fidelity has a wider range of investment funds if you want active management, and a more robust array of services if you want to buy and sell individual stocks.
The answer depends on you and your investment goals. There's no reason you can't have accounts with both Fidelity and Vanguard (among others). You'll have two (or more) sets of statements to review, multiple phone numbers to remember, several websites to navigate and hundreds of funds to understand and monitor.
Why is ETF not a good investment?
Buying high and selling low
At any given time, the spread on an ETF may be high, and the market price of shares may not correspond to the intraday value of the underlying securities. Those are not good times to transact business.
Low Liquidity
If an ETF is thinly traded, there can be problems getting out of the investment, depending on the size of your position relative to the average trading volume. The biggest sign of an illiquid investment is large spreads between the bid and the ask.
Leveraged ETF prices tend to decay over time, and triple leverage will tend to decay at a faster rate than 2x leverage. As a result, they can tend toward zero.
You expose your portfolio to much higher risk with sector ETFs, so you should use them sparingly, but investing 5% to 10% of your total portfolio assets may be appropriate. If you want to be highly conservative, don't use these at all.
ETF | Assets Under Management | Expense Ratio |
---|---|---|
Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT) | $70 billion | 0.10% |
VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) | $16.3 billion | 0.35% |
Invesco S&P MidCap Momentum ETF (XMMO) | $1.6 billion | 0.34% |
SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (XHB) | $1.8 billion | 0.35% |
Hold ETFs throughout your working life. Hold ETFs as long as you can, give compound interest time to work for you. Sell ETFs to fund your retirement. Don't sell ETFs during a market crash.
Protecting your assets
With our Customer Protection Guarantee, we reimburse you for losses from unauthorized activity in your accounts. We also participate in asset protection programs such as FDIC and SIPC to help provide the best service possible.
One of the biggest reasons Ramsey cautions investors about ETFs is that they are so easy to move in and out of. Unlike traditional mutual funds, which can only be bought or sold once per day, you can buy or sell an ETF on the open market just like an individual stock at any time the market is open.
If you own shares of an exchange-traded fund (ETF), you may receive distributions in the form of dividends. These may be paid monthly or at some other interval, depending on the ETF.
The ETF has a beta of 1.02 and standard deviation of 15.88% for the trailing three-year period. With about 110 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk. Fidelity High Dividend ETF is a reasonable option for investors seeking to outperform the Style Box - All Cap Value segment of the market.
What is the best Fidelity ETF for the S&P 500?
Our recommendation for the best overall S&P 500 index fund is the Fidelity 500 Index Fund. With a 0.015% expense ratio, it's the cheapest on our list. And it doesn't have a minimum initial investment requirement, sales loads or trading fees.

The Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) is a nonprofit organization that protects stocks, bonds, and other securities in case a brokerage firm goes bankrupt and assets are missing. The SIPC will cover up to $500,000 in securities, including a $250,000 limit for cash held in a brokerage account.
When you invest through a distributor like Fidelity, any cash held on your behalf is placed with a range of different banks in designated client bank accounts. As the cash is kept completely separate from Fidelity's own money, if we became insolvent it would be returned to you in an orderly manner.
Relatively few embrace working with multiple advisors (13%) or any individual advisor managing other advisors (quarterback approach, 5%). those with $1 million to $5 million in investable, non-retirement assets, and ultra-high-net-worth are investors with over $5 million in investable assets.
